Brief Introduction To Korean Language

Trying to gain knowledge of a new language on your own can be daunting, particularly when you make a decision to learn a foreign language that has no similarities with your native tongue. Korean language as well as most Asian languages appears very exotic to most English speakers. However, to master a Korean alphabet you need only a few hours.

Korean alphabet called Hangeul was invented during the reign of King Sejong in 1446. This alphabet consist 14 basic consonants and 10 basic vowels. The shapes of the consonants are similar to the shape of the mouth made when the sound is pronounced. Since, letters of similar sounds have similar shapes memorizing and learning the alphabet is not difficult.

The 10 basic vowels found in Korean alphabet are jointed to create new vowels called Double Vowels. These vowels can be combined in a number of different ways, then again no more than two can create a new combination. Korean language has 11 double vowels, so adding the 10 basics we get number of total 21 vowels found in Korean.

On top of double vowels, you will discover double consonants in Korean. They are separated into two groups. Group one, when the consonants are the same, and group two when the consonants are different. Double consonants can be puzzling at first, yet there are rules that inform us which consonants can be paired with which and how to pronounce them.

Korean language because of the long history of cultural contact with China has adopted many Chinese words. The borrowed vocabulary is called loan words or Sino Korean words. But not only Chinese has had influence on Korean. Words form English and other Western languages were adapted. These words are called Orreaeo, meaning words from abroad. Articulation of those words has been slightly modified, to make them easier to say.

Before you take on the challenge to learn Korean you might ask yourself, what level of expertise you want to accomplish. Do you want to be fluent, or know an adequate amount of phrases to make your journey to Korea more pleasant?

As soon as you set your goals, make sure that you have access to the language. To make the learning process faster and more efficient you should immerse yourself in the language. Listen to Korean radio, watch Korean movies, despite the fact that you wont be able to understand anything at first, you will familiarize yourself with the melody of the language. Try to read and speak. Language learning takes a huge amount of repetition, but once you have the enthusiasm and determination you will be able to converse in Korean in a short time.
